Milton Fruit Shop Refurbishment: A Fresh Look for a Brisbane Icon
This isn’t Fast Fitouts’ first time working with the Fruit Bowl team, but it’s certainly the most sentimental. The Milton Fruit Bowl on Baroona Road was the very first shop the family opened. For years, it held onto its history: old-school timber displays lined the walls, backed by bare brick. But as the business grew, the layout fell behind. The counter placement jammed foot traffic, and the overall flow no longer made sense.
When a major supermarket chain started building next door, the pressure was on. The team couldn't afford to look dated compared to the new corporate giant. They needed an upgrade, and they needed it fast. Naturally, they called in Fast Fitouts.
Keeping Pace with the Neighbours
Milton is the birthplace of this family-owned produce business, which has since expanded to Newmarket and Camp Hill. While those newer locations looked modern and sharp, the original Milton store was feeling tired. The owner wanted to bring the birthplace of his business up to the premium standard of his other stores—and outshine the competition moving in next door.
The Transformation
We started by stripping away the past. We demolished every inch of the old timber racks to make way for custom joinery from the Fast Fitouts workshop. We installed nine bays of sleek fruit shelving—matching the Newmarket aesthetic—alongside two heavy-duty rolling display units that staff can easily reposition as seasons change. We added integrated LED lighting to the shelves, instantly lifting the mood and letting the vibrant colours of the fresh produce do the talking.
The complete overhaul included:

Full Demolition: Ripping out the legacy counters, corner racks, and dated timber ceiling features.

Smart Layout Adjustments: Building a custom Meganite sales counter and relocating it to optimise shop flow, complete with repositioned power points.

Wall & Column Upgrades: Wrapping columns with custom display shelving and covering the old brick with fresh plasterboard, painted in the brand's signature matte black.

A New Welcoming Facade: Installing twin glass sliding entry doors with sidelights, complemented by a newly clad and painted timber storefront.

Back-of-House & Floors: Laying seamless new vinyl flooring throughout the entire shop and fitting a durable stainless steel bench in the kitchen.
Ten Days to Turn the Lights Back On
In retail, time is money. For a fresh produce store, it's everything. You can't trade through a major demolition, stock spoils quickly, and every day the doors are shut costs the owner heavily. With the new supermarket opening next door, a long shutdown wasn't an option.
Our solution? We prefabricated the entire joinery package off-site over four weeks.
When it came time to build, we pulled off the entire on-site strip-out and rebuild in just ten days.
The Verdict
Walk into the Milton Fruit Bowl today, and it’s a completely different experience. The produce pops under premium LED lighting. The clean black walls and seamless vinyl floors create a sharp, modern backdrop. Best of all, the counter is exactly where staff and customers need it.
When the doors reopened, the owner’s feedback was simple: he was absolutely stoked. As a family business ourselves, we understand how much pride goes into a legacy store. It was a privilege to help this Brisbane original step confidently into its next chapter.
